Does reflective fabric stay reflective after washing?
Reflective fabrics can usually still reflect light after washing, but their reflective performance may deteriorate. The degree of attenuation depends on the quality level of the reflective fabric and the washing method.
The core structure of reflective fabric is the adhesion of countless tiny glass beads on the fabric substrate. After the light enters the microbeads, it will be accurately reflected back to the direction of the light source like a mirror. During the washing process, the agitation and friction of the washing machine can cause the adhesive to age, resulting in wear and tear of glass beads or detachment from the fabric surface. Once the glass microbeads fall off, the reflective function will be lost. In addition, certain chemical detergents or excessively high water temperatures may also corrode the reflective layer.
Key difference: Washability level of reflective fabric
◉ Normal/Low Washable Grade
• Typical washability times: 15-30 times.
• Commonly seen in some basic warning clothing or decorative reflective products.
◉ High washability/industrial washing grade
• Typical washability times: 50-100 times or more.
• Specially designed for workwear or professional protective clothing that requires frequent washing.
Washing method
How to properly wash reflective fabrics to maximize their reflectivity?
• Water temperature is key: the water temperature should not exceed 60 ℃, and it is recommended to use 30-40 ℃ or lower for daily use.
• Choose a mild detergent: Use a neutral detergent. It is strictly prohibited to use bleach.
• Reduce mechanical damage: Choose gentle mode. Reduce agitation.
• Drying and Ironing: Priority should be given to natural hanging and shade drying. Ironing should be done at low temperatures, with the iron base not exceeding 110 ℃.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How is reflectivity measured?
A: Check retroreflective coefficient Ra (cd/(lx·m²)). Safety wear usually 100–200; high-bright silver can be ≥500.
Q: Does it still reflect after washing?
A: Yes, depending on wash grade. Common ISO 6330 requirements: 25/50/100 cycles, with brightness still meeting spec.
Q: Can it be customized?
A: Yes—width, brightness, color, base fabric (polyester/TC/flame-retardant/elastic) and reflective printing.
Q: How to process?
A: Sewing, heat bonding, etc. For heat bonding, confirm temperature/pressure; nylon/DWR fabrics are harder to bond.
Q: Is flame-retardant reflective fabric available?
A: Yes, for oil/chemical industries; confirm the required flame-retardant standard.
