How to install Joist Tape
The core of installing Joist Tape is "dry cleaning, edge bonding, and full overlap". The construction details determine whether it can truly function as a waterproof seal.
Installation Steps
• Preparation: The top surface of the support beam must be completely dry and clean, removing wood chips and dust; Polish the wooden thorns first. Wet, frosty, or dirty surfaces cannot be adhered.
• Cutting alignment: Cut according to the length of the support beam, leaving 2-3 inches of allowance at each end for overlapping. The tape width should completely cover the top surface of the support beam and slightly wrap around the edges on both sides.
• Paste and compact: Do not tear off the entire release film at once. First, peel off 30-40 centimeters, place it in the center and press it firmly. Then, roll the tape while peeling off the film, and then use your hand or roller to press it firmly from the center to both sides, releasing any air. Extra pressure is required on the edges.
• Overlapping and special areas: Two sections of tape must overlap, at least 1-2 inches, and the end is recommended to be 4 inches. High risk areas such as wall beams, staircase side panels, beams, and column bottoms should be carefully covered.
• Screws and Inspection: Deck screws can be directly threaded through adhesive tape, and butyl rubber will self seal without the need for additional glue. After all the stickers are applied, compact the edges and overlaps as a whole again.
Notes
• Ideal construction temperature above 10 ° C (50 ° F); Low temperature can be slightly heated with a hair dryer, and the final adhesive strength is reached after about 24 hours.
• Construction shall not be carried out on surfaces that are damp, frozen, or have visible water.
• Do not tear off long sections of backing at once, as this is the most common cause of wrinkling, self-adhesive, and alignment failure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What width of joist tape do I need for my joists?
A: Single standard support beam: Use 1-5/8 "to 2" (approximately 41-50 mm) tape to fully cover narrow single support beams. Double/multiple beam, beam or ledger board: 3 "-4" (about 80-100 mm) tape should be used to cover the entire top surface with one strip, reducing joints. If you want the tape to slightly wrap around the side of the support beam to provide edge protection, you can choose a larger size (such as 70 mm or 100 mm) on top of the standard width. Before placing an order, the width of the top surface of the support beam should be actually measured, rather than estimated based on the nominal size of the wood.
Q: The release liner is tearing and impossible to peel. How do I deal with it?
A: This is the most common practical complaint of butyl tape: the adhesive layer is extremely sticky, and the release film is prone to tearing when the temperature is low or the adhesive layer overflows slightly, resulting in repeated "film picking". Effective coping strategies include:
• Peel off only 3-6 inches of release film at a time, sticking and peeling at the same time, instead of tearing off the entire strip at once and sticking it again. This can avoid the tape sticking or the film tearing and making it difficult to start.
• Wrap the release film back onto the back of the entire roll (with the non stick side of the film attached to the back of the tape), and as the tape unfolds, the release film will automatically peel off without the need to repeatedly search for the "head".
• When the temperature is low, use scissors instead of tearing by hand to steadily and slowly cut open the edge of the release film, which is less likely to tear than forcibly pulling.
