The most reflective tape is diamond grade microprism reflective tape, commonly referred to as "ASTM Type XI" grade reflective material.
The following are its key characteristics and reasons:
1. Excellent reflective performance
• Technical principle: Its surface is composed of millions of precision manufactured micro cube corner prisms. This structure can reflect light (such as car lights) directly back to the light source with extremely high efficiency.
• Performance data: Its reflection intensity is usually 3 to 5 times that of traditional glass bead reflective tape. The initial reflectivity value usually exceeds 1000 candela/lux/square meter, far exceeding the standards of most other reflective materials.
2. Main application areas
This high-performance tape is designed specifically for critical, high-speed, or high-risk scenarios that require the highest safety standards for visibility
• Highways and construction areas: used for traffic signs, roadblocks, and diversion facilities.
• Emergency and rescue vehicles: pasted on fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars to ensure extremely conspicuous visibility.
• Trucks and oversized vehicles: In the United States, trailer sides and rear sections of specific widths and lengths are mandatory (according to FMVSS 108 standard).
• Truck outline identification tape: This is the highest standard for red and white/red and yellow striped tape used on heavy-duty trucks and trailers.
3. Grades and Standards
• ASTM D4956: This is the authoritative standard specification for reflective materials. The "Type XI" represents the prism type material with the highest performance and longest service life. Diamond grade "is a common commercial term for Type XI materials.
• Color: Silver (white) has the strongest reflectivity. Fluorescent yellow, fluorescent red orange (commonly used for truck identification), and fluorescent lemon yellow also belong to this level, but the initial reflectivity is slightly lower than silver.
4. Durability
Diamond grade tape is also the most durable. Its surface is hard and smooth, and has an excellent sealing layer that can resist:
• Wear and tear, dirt, and chemicals
• Climate aging and UV degradation
• Moisture intrusion can maintain high reflectivity for many years (usually more than 10 years).
Compared to other common adhesive tapes:
• Glass bead tape: Low cost, weak reflective performance. Commonly used for clothing, labeling, and general purposes.
• Engineering grade prism tape: It has high performance and is commonly used for traffic signs, but its reflection intensity is not as strong as diamond grade.
