What are the rules for reflective tape on trailers?
The regulations on trailer reflective tape in Europe and America are very strict, mainly aimed at improving the visibility of vehicles at night or in low visibility, and preventing rear end and side collision accidents. Although the goals of the United States and Europe are consistent, there are significant differences in specific technical standards, mandatory scope, colors, and installation modes.
Regulations in the United States (FMCSA&NHTSA)
The regulations in the United States are mainly formulated by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Administration and NHTSA, with the core basis being Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108.
1. Mandatory installation scope
If your trailer meets all of the following conditions, reflective markings must be installed:
Width: The overall width is 80 inches (approximately 2.03 meters) or more.
Vehicle weight: The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) exceeds 10000 pounds (approximately 4.5 tons).
Production date: manufactured after December 1, 1993.
Special note: FMCSA originally had mandatory retrofitting requirements for old trailers manufactured before December 1, 1993, but has now proposed to revoke this regulation because it is believed that most trailers on the road already meet the new standards.
2. Technical requirements and location of reflective tape
Standard: Must comply with the requirements of S5.7.1 (Reflective Tape) or S5.7.2 (Reflective Plates) section of FMVSS No. 108.
Color and Pattern:
Side: White or yellow/amber reflective tape must be used. The installation mode can be continuous strip or intermittent, but it must outline the body contour.
Tail: Red reflective tape must be used to outline the complete contour of the rear of the vehicle.
No obstruction: The reflective tape must not be obstructed by the tailboard, cargo, soil or dirt at any time, otherwise the vehicle cannot be driven on the road.
European Regulation (ECE Regulation 104)
Europe mainly follows the ECE R104 regulation of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, which is widely used throughout the European Union and other European countries.
1. Mandatory installation scope
Compared to the United States, European regulations have a wider coverage and lower threshold:
Truck: a cargo vehicle with a maximum gross weight exceeding 7.5 tons.
Trailer: A trailer with a maximum gross weight exceeding 3.5 tons.
Effective from July 2011, all newly registered vehicles mentioned above must be mandatory for installation.
Note: For small trailers weighing less than 3.5 tons or light trailers weighing less than 750 kilograms (O1 category), European regulations usually do not make mandatory requirements.
2. Technical requirements and location of reflective tape
Standard: Must comply with ECE R104 certification requirements and have the E-mark certification mark on the product.
Color and Pattern:
Side: White or yellow reflective tape must be used. It is allowed to install in a "contour style" or "partial contour style", but it must cover most of the length of the vehicle's side.
Tail: Red reflective tape must be used and a complete outline must be drawn. Reflective boards need to be attached to the four corners at the rear of the carriage.
Performance: It is required to be clearly recognizable by the driver from 1000 meters away when exposed to external light sources at night.
