How strong is the adhesion of Duct Tape? How long can it stick?

Duct Tape is a multifunctional and strong adhesive tape made of fabric as the substrate and coated with a high viscosity adhesive layer. It was named after its initial use for sealing heating pipes and has now developed into a well-known "universal repair tool".

It is an excellent short-term/emergency solution, rather than a permanent adhesive.

How strong is the stickiness?

•  Extremely strong initial adhesion: Thanks to the high viscosity pressure-sensitive adhesive, it can quickly adhere to most clean and dry surfaces (such as metal, plastic, wood, glass).
•  High peel strength: Once pasted and compacted, it requires a significant amount of force to peel and resist tearing.
•  Load bearing capacity example: A roll of high-quality pipeline tape with standard width, whose single tape can lift an adult (about 70 kilograms) in a short period of time, but this is only achieved under ideal surface and correct adhesion.
•  Key limitation: The viscosity strength is highly dependent on the surface condition. On dusty, oily, damp, or uneven surfaces, the viscosity will significantly decrease.

How long can it stick? (Persistence)

This is a problem influenced by multiple factors, generally as follows:

Usage scenarios/conditions Expected persistence main reason
Indoor, at room temperature, dry, stress free Months to years Ideal environment, slow aging of adhesive layer.
Outdoor, exposed to sunlight and rain Weeks to months Ultraviolet radiation makes the adhesive layer brittle and powdery; Moisture may penetrate the edges of the fabric.
High temperature environment (such as heating pipes) Easy to fail High temperature softened adhesive layer, causing slippage (high-temperature resistant HVAC tape should be used).
Low temperature environment Viscosity decreases The adhesive layer becomes harder, and both the initial adhesion and durability weaken.
Endure sustained tension or vibration Possible rapid failure The tape will slowly peel off from the edge.

Best positioning: temporary repair, emergency fixing, sealing, and bundling. It is not a permanent solution to replace welding, screws, or professional adhesives.

The key to extending lifespan:

•  Surface cleaning: Be sure to clean and dry the surface before pasting.
•  Fully press: After pasting, press firmly, especially on the edges.
•  Avoid extreme environments: Try to avoid continuous sun exposure, high temperatures, humidity, and chemical corrosion.
